Japanic- Oneballjay gets lucky in Japan

Day One-

The Oneballjay crew consisting of Temple and Matt Cummins, Forrest Burki and Zak Basher headed over to Japan for a couple grassy roots contest and to hopefully score some powder. We hooked up with our Japan friends, Taka, Kay, and snowshredder/ phototographer Endo. After an six hour drive we ended up at Endo’s Grandmother’s hostel where we would be based out of for the next six days. No heat or hot water but some of the best Onsens in Japan !
The next morning we woke and drove to the Bluewood Lake Resort for the Annual Bowl riding contest. It was raining but still lots of fun. Surf carves, board slides and transfers into and out of the bowl. Zak Basher took home double high lights. The first was a very hairball top rope bombdrop out of a possible 16ft scaffolding. One inch round steel pipe for balance, gnarl. Zak has no fear we learned when it's on. Back to Zak in a minute. The “doctor” M.C. was called on twice. The first being a wounded Japanese rider, final diagnosis, broken collarbone. Next, last call, last hit of the contest, Zak attacks, bam… shoulder dislocate. kinda burly. M.C. put one foot on neck other on ribs/torso and pulled arm till the shoulder let the arm back in. Zak pops back up and off we go, get some food and to the onsen.

Day Two-

The Rain turned to sunshine so we headed up to Hakuba Happo Resort thinking we were getting some backcountry pow but when we got to the top we realized it was frozen solid. Slushy session at the High Cascade Snowboard park and called it a day. With the forecast looking very grim and warm with freezing temperatures at night we were pushing hard to take this snow trip and camp out on the beach near Chiba for some surf, but the communication gab seemed to get a little further and we stayed put.

Day Three- Still Raining and the surf check out wasn't going to happen, so we got in the vans and headed out for an 8 hr. ride up in the hills to an old village town to sight see. We did see some monkeys along the road and some amazing backyard and more tunnels than i have ever been inside of collectively my entire life. Sketchy roads, steep valleys, a very cool part of Japan to check out.

Day Four- we woke up early to see that it has snowed a couple inches, and with that we needed a new mountain that had better tree skiing with less of a pitch to hold the snow. After mentioning our need for smaller resorts with better trees, our Japanese guides took us right to the resort Matt and Temple had been there before ten years earlier.
(Tsugaike ) Six new inches of fresh, no tracks, and snowing, perfect shredding.
Calling the reports in the morning to see where to go and figured to go back to where we went the day before, good call, frozen base layer with another 5” on top. Lots of tree skiing powder lines and looking for hidden glades from the gondola ride up. Zak, still healing from his shoulder dislocation was at 70% maybe again and charging though the woods when a tree got in his way and served Zak in a big way. Matt heard people yelling for him and got down to him first. He was talking but not making any sense and ovbiousley in a lot of pain. Zak hit the tree with his head and back but saved his injured shoulder and newly repaired knee. We were all stoked he’s a cowboy and rode out another one but his head and body were differently feeling it for the rest of the trip. We shredded all day and found some cool dams and rivers to gap. Temple and Forrest was warming up and going off.
We got back to the hostel, and hit up the local skate park, then onsen, and Thai food café that happened to be throwing a big party from their last day being open of the winter season. All you could eat and drink for $20.00 ! Turned out to the the best day yet of the trip, still snowing hard outside.

How to lace the Burton Speed lace boots in 10 min.

So, those $400.00 Burton boots with the fancy lace system we good for the first 30 days on the hill and then all hell broke loose.
This has happened to everyone i know and i thought i would share with you a little re-lacing method that takes the 3 hour journey to your minds black hole hole and back to about 10 min. per boot. And to the Burton people, since your trying to sell something to everyone in the entire industry, how about making some real laces, a re-lace kit with proper tools and instructions or something to help out the people ?

Get some tools-

Burton replacement laces- note: there is a top and bottom

Super Glue bottle
1 foot of 40 pound test fishing line
a thin, sharp pointy object, like a skewer for BBQ, or needle nose pliers
1) brand new razor blade.

1. cut off your old laces- remembering how they go before, or label them with a piece of tape or ink pen.
2. take your razor blade and cut off the end of your new laces as clean as possible and as close to the end, NOT the handle, as possible.
3. take your fishing line, dip it into the super glue and insert it quickly into the INSIDE of the black part of the laces. Inside the black outer fabric is a white part of the lace.
4. insert Depth- about 3-4 mm
5. let dry for 5 min.
6. now you have a lace attached to the fishing line. Take the fishing line and insert it at the top of the boot, through the black lace lock and into the hole for the lace. A sharp pointy object may be necessary to start it.
7. you can test to make sure the connection where the lace and line meet is not too thick with glue by inserting it into one of the other lace holes on the boot. It should fit and slide in easy, if not take the razor blade and very carefully shave off the extra glue on the connection to make it fit better. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CUT YOURSELF AT THIS TIME. IT WILL SUCK !!!!!
8. Lace up your boots.
9. I recommend using some warm ONEBALLJAY shred wax on all your laces so they last longer and glide better. Take the bar and rub it on them as best as you can. ( we hope Burton will buy some of our wax to better their laces, but we are not counting on it.
9. Someone make a PVC coated cable system for Burton Speed lace upgrade !!

good luck and go fast !

OneBall in effect

Bryan Rushforth

Matt Edgers

Due to the wrath of mother nature earlier this season the Holy Oly was forced to move a little farther west this year. This event is usually held at Hyak on Snoqualmie Pass however, earlier this season a major "rain event" occurred creating a massive snow and mud slide on Hyak which pushed its main chair towers off their foundations. Because of this Hyak was unable to open this year but the Summit at Snoqualmie, just down the road, turned out to be a good alternative.
The day started a little foggy but ended up nice and sunny and perfect for cruising around, checking out the action. There were several features for jibbing, the main attraction being a large quarter pipe. The Lib Tech tree car served as a sweet log ride. Some of the Northwest's finest snowboarders and snowskaters were there. Lib Tech was there with bananas and hot dogs for all. OneBall was there waxing up sticks. Oneball team rider Matt Guess won Best Trick. Team rider Austin Hironaka won for Highest Air. Monty Hayes won overall and best NW Method award went to Kurt Jensen. Good times!!

Mt. Baker Race 2009

Here are some pictures of the Mt. Baker Banked Slalom race. The lack of snow made it one the tightest courses I can remember but one with the best flow. The weather was nice but the course got iced up and rutted making it a battle to get to the bottom in one piece. The Oneballjay wax tent and waxers were there at the top trying to hook up the people that needed more speed. Many racers were waxed with Oneballjay either with wax handed out or at the tent. These are some top finishes of Oneballjay racers.

See you next year !
